What can go wrong

Scion takes and then dies: It’s relatively easy to disrupt a delicate union between a rootstock and a scion when it is still young. Unless absolutely necessary, don’t move the plant until several months after the graft has taken.

Scion rots: Rot is generally caused by excessive humidity. If ambient humidity is high, keep a fan blowing in the vicinity of the cactus to keep the air circulating.

A newly grafted cactus may fail if moved.

1 CUT

Use an extremely sharp knife, razor, or box cutter to slice off the top of the rootstock plant. Do not discard the top; instead, plant it in a pot filled with a cactus mix and topped off with a layer of vermiculite. It will root here, giving you another rootstock for future grafting efforts.
